The specialist's opinion
Like darkness surrendering to light, the dark, melancholy scale of the Battiloro Persephone offers a round, poignant sound.
In Greek mythology, Persephone symbolizes nature in constant mutation, divided between day and night.
This divinity of two worlds inspired our new creation: an instrument with a dual personality, with nine notes on the upper dome and four on the lower.
Battiloro Handpans are crafted from a single sheet of mild steel, a low-carbon metal close to natural iron. This raw material is carefully worked to form two perfectly paired hemispherical shells, then assembled edge-to-edge with handcrafted precision.
The shaped body then undergoes a vacuum nitriding process at very high temperatures. This heat treatment transforms the surface of the metal, which becomes smooth, silky to the touch and particularly stable over time. The base of the instrument is then ready: all that remains is to give it its voice.
Each Battiloro Handpan is hand-carved, note by note, using mallets. On the hammered dome appear the central Ding and the various peripheral notes, forming a characteristic relief of craters and valleys. Each note is forged by hand and tuned by ear, several times a day for at least five days, to achieve perfect harmony.
This painstaking work guarantees a unique richness of sound: no two Battiloros sound exactly alike. Like a voiceprint, each instrument develops its own unique tonal personality. A Battiloro Handpan is much more than a handpan - it's a voice unlike any other.
