The specialist's opinion
Launched in 1953 as a premium declination of the basic Les Paul, the Les Paul Custom was created at the request of Les Paul himself, who wanted a black version of the model "evoking the elegance of a tuxedo".
In 1961, production of the single-coupe Les Paul Custom was discontinued in favor of a new double-coupe model that would go down in legend as the SG Custom.
Finally reintroduced to the catalog in 1968, the Les Paul Custom saw its production transferred from Kalamazoo to Nashville during the 1970s, while it benefited from several evolutions improving the model a little further, including a multi-piece maple top replacing the original all-mahogany neck construction, or a new maple neck. Today, these 1970s Les Paul Custom are among the most popular guitars on the vintage market. After 20 years of offering the A exclusively through Gibson Custom, it is with immense pride that Gibson launches the Les Paul Custom 70s. It features classic 1970s specs, including a mahogany body with a three-piece maple top. The bonded body features 5-ply purfling at the top and 3-ply purfling at the back. The maple neck features a characteristic 1970s scroll-reinforced profile, as well as a glued-on ebony fingerboard with 22 jumbo medium frets and mother-of-pearl block inlays. The glued neck headstock is also adorned with mother-of-pearl in the form of the famous Custom split diamond inlay, which first appeared on the Gibson Super 400 and has since become inseparable from the Les Paul Custom. The Les Paul Custom 70s boasts gold-plated hardware, including a Tune-O-Matic Nashville bridge, aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece and smooth-flowing Grover
Rotomatic tuning machines with flowing Keystone knobs. Everything has been recreated down to the last detail, including Posi-Lok strap ties, 5-layer pickguard and Witch Hat potentiometers in true seventies style. The electronics also respect the spirit of the era, with a pair of calibrated T-type Humbucker pickups, each with individual volume and tone controls, and hand-wired to Orange Drop capacitors. The Les Paul Custom 70s is available in four high-gloss nitrocellulose varnish finishes including Ebony, Tobacco Burst and Wine Red, as well as a version featuring a beautiful Buttercream top, and comes in a hard case that will protect your instrument during storage and travel.
