The specialist's opinion
The Radial Cube is a compact 3-slot desktop rack for 500 Series modules, designed by Radial Engineering, a leading Canadian manufacturer of professional audio equipment.
This chassis follows the open-source Workhorse specifications (Who's-Doc) established by Radial, guaranteeing full compatibility with the latest 500 Series modules while remaining backward compatible with older API formats, including Radial modules and many third-party brands.
Three 500 Series slots with generous power supply and 48V phantom
The Cube powers its three slots via an external power supply delivering around 500 mA of continuous current, enough to run even the most power-hungry modules simultaneously. A separate 48V phantom power circuit provides 10 mA for the microphone preamplifiers. Each slot is equipped with a self-resetting fuse that protects the system in the event of a faulty module, without the need for manual replacement. A front-panel switch mutes and unmutes the system during module swaps, and an LED indicator confirms the correct connection of the external power supply.
Radial connectivity and Feed function for Series routing
Rear connectivity uses Neutrik connectors with non-oxidizable silver-nickel contacts for each slot, plus TRS jacks for parallel processing and cross-patching. Inside, 15-pin EDAC connectors with gold contacts ensure optimum signal transfer between modules and chassis. The Cube incorporates an innovative Feed function that allows modules to be linked together in series without the need for an external cable: the signal flows automatically from one module to the next, greatly simplifying the creation of complex processing chains such as a full channel strip (dynamic equalizer preamp). A Stereo Link switch allows two modules to be coupled for seamless stereo processing.
14-gauge steel construction and Omniport on each slot
The 14-gauge steel chassis guarantees proven robustness for studio or mobile recording use. Each slot is also equipped with an Omniport - a TRS socket - enabling module manufacturers to implement specific functions such as a sidechain or trigger input. A removable carrying handle makes it easy to move the Cube between sessions. The Cube has no audio circuitry of its own: it adds no coloration, distortion or artifact to the signal.
Specification
Unlike other 500 series enclosures which are typically rack mounted, The Cube can also be recessed onto a work surface using the optional mounting brackets. These allow either simple embedding or angled mounting at 30 ° to optimize visual control comfort.
In accordance with the criteria established by the Workhorse Radial, the Cube is 100% compatible with classic API modules, while being optimized for a growing Radial range of preamps, processors and routing devices. The base of the construction begins with a 14-gauge steel frame and 15-pin gold double contact EDAC connectors for optimal signal transfer. In order to maximize the headroom, the external power supply delivers 500mA of current for the greedy modules, plus a separate 48V phantom power supply that delivers 10mA for microphone preamps. The rear panel connectivity includes standard XLRs for each module and their doubling to ¼ inch TRS jacks for added flexibility and parallel routing. Instead of the traditional 'wired patch' system used by others, Le Cube has an innovative 'feed' function that routes modules directly after one another, without the need for a cable. The stereo wiring of 2 modules is also done using a simple switch. the Cube is also equipped with an OMNIPORT socket on each slot. This TRS jack allows each third party module manufacturer to implement a unique function for a given module, such as a side-chain for a compressor or an instrument input on a preamp.
