The specialist's opinion
The AC-Signature fretless Fbass has been developed in collaboration with Canadian jazz legend Alain Caron since the mid-1980s.
The Series was born of Alain's desire to create a versatile fretless bass that could do it all: from acoustic to modern electric tones, a powerful, clear sound for impeccable groove, and an extended neck for easy access to solos.
Alain often regards fretless playing as a second language, so it was essential that this instrument be extremely expressive and sensitive to playing nuances. This is made possible by the original semi-cavity design, the use of top-quality wood, also employed in the manufacture of traditional double basses, a hand-wound F Bass single-coil pickup, as well as an RMC piezo sensor system integrated into the Nut and our natural, transparent F Bass preamp. The Fbass AC5 is built with a 34.5" Scale length. This 0.5-inch scale length brings clarity to the low B. The Pickup pushes the sound of the Jazz Bass' single-coil pickup even further. While retaining powerful mids and clear highs, the overall timbre is richer, smoother and free from high-frequency distortion or grain. To eliminate the 60 Hz hum often associated with traditional single-coil pickups, simply pull up the volume knob on the Bridges pickup to activate the anti-snore mode.
The AC5 also offers first-rate playability. Thanks to meticulous design and consideration of the weight of each component (down to the gram), the AC5 offers perfect balance, whether you're playing sitting or standing. The high horn is curved outwards, set further back in the body and sculpted to match the curvature of the hand pressing on the strings. This facilitates access to the end of the Fingerboard and optimizes comfort when seated. It also features a slightly extended low horn to bring the first position closer when playing with a strap.
