The specialist's opinion

Although the suite only appeared in 1905, the inscription of the year of publication ('' 1890 '') made by Debussy in the prints of the engraving indicates that it is indeed an older work .

Now lost, the manuscript had been sold by Debussy to the publisher Choudens, without any publication subsequently being undertaken.

The fact that the work was published later shows that Debussy was still convinced of his work. This work in four movements was made famous by its slow movement, Clair de lune, with a very special atmosphere. The numerous transcriptions for various formations demonstrate the uninterrupted popularity of the piece, but also of the whole suite. (Editor's note)
