The specialist's opinion

A very rich instrument that can be found in different genres of music across Brazil.

Specification

The pandeiro is a tambourine covered with a thin skin provided with small jingles inserted into the wooden frame of the instrument. The ideal tone results in a warm tone as well as a dry and crystal-clear sound for the cymbals. A good pandeiro reproduces all the sounds of the instrumental section. It differs from the classic tambourine by its single row of jingles. Under its appearance of a simple jingle drum, the pandeiro is an ides''repentistas' (troubadours) from São Paulo, the berimbaus players during the '' rodas '' capoeira, without forgetting the samba pagoda sessions in Rio. The pandeiro technique can be simple (accompaniment of capoeira) or complex (the Fundo pagoda by Quintal, for example). There is a multiplicity of distinct strikes making it possible to reproduce all the sounds necessary for polyrhythm. It is held with one hand and with the other, different notes are made depending on the positions of the hand. The clicks alternate with the tonic notes and a wrist movement, in which the fingers are used a lot, allows to play a rhythm specific to the pandeiro which supports the basic rhythm. The pandeiro has acquired its letters of nobility in the hands of musicians such as Marcos Suzano or Dudu Tucci.
