An active speaker has an integrated amplification system. It can therefore be connected directly to the electrical network and does not need a third party element to operate. It sometimes offers additional functions such as high cuts, low cuts , adjustments of certain frequency bands, effects ... A passive speaker does not have an amplification system. It therefore needs a power amplifier to be supplied and for the signal to be amplified. Active, passive operation is also valid for subwoofers .
