The Powertube Radial is a Class A tube mic preamp (100% discrete circuitry) intended to capture the essence of the vocal or instrument, while adding rich overtones, warmth, and some character.
Specification
Designed for the Workhorse Radial or any other API500 rack, the Powertube features a Jensen ultra-low noise transformer as input. Associated with the lamp, it allows a perfect frequency response, while producing a warmth that only the Jensen knows how to distill in all musicality. The signal is then amplified by a handpicked 12AX7 tube. Using innovative 'voltage pumping' technology no less than 140 volts pass through the tube to provide the excitement and character of a vintage 'high voltage' tube amplifier. This then feeds the balanced Class-A output stage, resulting in 60dB of quiet gain, making it ideal for use with most microphones.
On the front, there is an XLR input supported by a 48V phantom power supply. To optimize the signal-to-noise of the Powertube, the latter is equipped with a gain control as well as a trim. A large and attractive 10-segment LED meter offers a detailed visualization of the incoming levels. Going into the red is not a problem with this kind of preamp, it enhances the harmonic content and the compression. For even more character, the Air switch allows you to densify a male voice or crisp an acoustic guitar. The high pass filter controls the low end of the spectrum.
